Design Criteria
  • Total Kinetic Energy
  •      E = ½ A m v2


    • Where A = vessel added mass coefficient
    • m = vessel displacement
    • v  = impact speed


  • Total energy is absorbed by:
    • Vessel hull
    • Structure

Energy Absorbed
  • DNV curves for up to 5000 MT hull









  • Energy absorbed by structure
  •     Es = E - Ehull

Impact Assessment
  • Apply measured displacement
  • at impact location

Load Sequence
  • Dead Load and Weights
    • Apply dead load and weights first
    • Apply appropriate live loads
    • Use combinations if possible (requires “CMB” option)

  • Impact
    • Increment impact load*
    • 2. May need to refine increment size near capacity

Survivability
  • Structure sufficient to absorb required energy or
  • displacement

Post Impact
  • Ensure survivability from design environment after impact event


  • Include:
  • 1. Impact damage
  • 2. Residual stresses from impact
